Developing high quality links from authority sites like Pinterest takes persistence, experimentation and creativity. Today, we’ll discuss the SEO benefits pinning can bring your real estate business.
Just The Basics: What is Pinterest?
Pinterest is a social network that allows you to “pin” things online, just as you would pin them on a real life bulletin board. People save images of things they like, organized on boards such as: home design ideas, favorite recipes, places they’ve been, things they want to see, anything that inspires them and says a little bit about who they are. 80% of the sites users are women, but men are also starting to join according to this infographic by TAMBA.
There are three main elements to consider when using Pinterest, and these are:
Pins – Pins are images of things you to add to your profile, pinned from a website or uploaded from your device. Every pin contains an image, a link to a web page with more information on the saved image, and 500-character limit description where users add their own personal notes, and businesses try to trigger readers’ attention and make them click the link and take action.
Pin Suggestion: Pin your blog articles adding high resolution and quality photos that will attract users’ attention, create videos and images and pin them on your boards to build links to your site.

Boards – Boards are where you pin the images. You know, like a real life bulletin board. Every board is organized around a certain topic like furniture, home design tips, holiday, wedding, healthy food, etc., with pins that relate to the subject that’s covered.

Repins – Repins occur when other people RE-pin your originally pinned image on one of their boards. That’s where Pinterest gets interesting for link building. But we’ll get to that…
How Can Real Estate Agents Build Links Using Pinterest?
When someone repins an image, the person who first pinned that image will also be credited. The original source link remains visible no matter how many times that image gets repined.
This means that when you pin a photo of a luxury oceanfront home and the image goes viral on the site (i.e. lots of users repin it), you are getting source-links on each repined image that now exists on other people’s boards. This is how pins are valuable for building links.

How Can Realtors Use Pinterest?
Long before buyers contact a Realtor, they’re making notes, tearing out images from magazines and creating a wish list of their dream home. By this point you’ve probably figured out how you can use Pinterest to build quality links to your real estate website. The main idea is to use the site to promote some or all of your best photos and make them appeal to your target market so they would want to repin them on their personal, or group boards. You can pin:
- Design & Unique Architecture
- Kitchen and Dining
- Master Bedrooms
- Luxury Homes
- Pools & Spas
- Celebrity Mansions
- Weird Houses

Place Pins - Allow pinners to add maps of multiple places to their pins, which is not only useful for travel and vacation planning, but for organizing a night out with friends also, or researching your dream home to buy. Place Pins now serve as local business listings, and for real estate agents the can be pretty beneficial. As Pinterest shares, “every day people pin about 1.5 million places, and now there are more than 750 million pins of destinations on the site”, so you can imagine there’s already a strong demand for this type of content on the social network.
Creating a board of Place Pins is easy. Just select ‘add a map’ when you create a new board, or edit an existing board’s settings to add a map. Real estate place pin suggestions:
- map of all current/active listings with links back to your website
- highlight attractions in your market area that make it especially appealing
- post a self-guided tour of historic homes
- map of recommended restaurants and sightseeing locations
Don’t forget that this is social media. It is not your advertising platform. Comment, like, and re-pin other people’s images. As with any social media platform, people with more followers will have greater authority. It’s likely that part of a search algorithm will include how engaging your Pinterest profile is.
